To talk about what you are able to do, or what is possible, use the English word can. For things you are not able to do, or that are not possible, use can’t. Can is a special verb called a ‘modal verb’. This means it does not change its form for different subjects like I, you, he, oder they. You always use the base form of another verb (the infinitive without ‘to’) right after can oder can’t. For example, I can swim means you have the ability to swim. She can’t fly means she does not have the ability to fly. It’s a very common and useful verb for A1 learners to express abilities.

What Does ‘Can’ Mean in English?

Can is a modal verb. We use it to talk about ability. It means ‘poder’ in Spanish.

You use can to say that someone has the skill or the possibility to do something.

How to Use ‘Can’ for Positive Ability (+)

How to Use ‘Can’t’ for Negative Ability (-)
