The Present Simple talks about habits, routines, and facts. The Present Continuous talks about actions happening right now or temporary situations. Understanding this key difference is essential for A2 English learners to communicate clearly. For example, you use the Present Simple to say I usually drink coffee in the morning, because it’s a routine. But you use the Present Continuous to say I am drinking coffee now, because it’s happening at this exact moment. This guide will help you choose the correct tense for different situations, improving your daily conversations and writing.

When Do We Use the Present Simple?

We use the Present Simple for actions that happen regularly or are always true.

  • Habits and Routines: Things you do often. For example, She eats breakfast every day.
  • Facts and General Truths: Things that are always true. For example, The sun rises in the east.
  • Schedules and Timetables: Fixed events. For example, The train leaves at 7 PM.

Common time expressions for the Present Simple include always, usually, often, sometimes, never, every day/week/month.

西班牙语母语者常犯的错误

Many Spanish speakers sometimes use the Present Simple for actions happening right now, similar to how it works in Spanish. However, in English, this is often incorrect.

  • 错误: I read a book now. (This sounds like a habit)
  • 正确: I am reading a book now. (This means it’s happening at this moment)

Remember that the Present Continuous (am/is/are + -ing) is for actions in progress.

常见问题

What is the main difference between Present Simple and Present Continuous?

"(《世界人权宣言》) Present Simple is for habits, facts, and routines. The Present Continuous is for actions happening at the moment of speaking or temporary situations.

Can I use ‘always’ with Present Continuous?

Usually, always is for the Present Simple (I always drink tea). But we can use always with Present Continuous to show annoyance or criticism, like He is always complaining!

What are ‘state verbs’ and how do they relate to these tenses?

State verbs (or non-action verbs) describe states, feelings, opinions, or senses, not actions. Examples are like, love, know, believe, understand. We usually do not use state verbs in the Present Continuous. For example, we say I like coffee, not I am liking coffee.
