What are the Months of the Year in English?

Knowing the months is important for talking about dates and events. There are twelve months in a year.

  • Always write months with a capital letter. For example, January, not january.
  • Costumamos usar a preposição in before a month. For example, My birthday is in May.

How Do We Use Ordinal Numbers for Dates?

When we talk about dates, we use ordinal numbers, not cardinal numbers. Ordinal numbers tell us the order of things (first, second, third, etc.).

  • The first three ordinal numbers are special: first (1st), second (2nd), third (3rd).
  • For most other numbers, we add -th. Por exemplo, fourth (4th), fifth (5th), sixth (6th).
  • When writing dates, we use the number and then the ordinal ending: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th.
  • We use the preposition on for specific dates. For example, The party is on the tenth of July.

How Can I Talk About the Future?

There are many ways to talk about the future in English. At A1 level, you will use simple time expressions to show when something will happen.

  • Uso tomorrow for the day after today. For example, I will go to the market tomorrow.
  • Uso this with parts of the day or days of the week. For example, this evening, this Wednesday.
  • Uso next with days, weeks, months, or years. For example, next Monday, next week, next month, next year.
  • Uso on with specific days. For example, on Friday.
  • Uso at the weekend ou on the weekend (American English).
