Errores habituales de los hispanohablantes

Here are some common mistakes Spanish speakers make with these words:

  • Fruit (singular/plural): In English, fruit is often uncountable when you talk about fruit in general.
    • Correcto: I eat a lot of fruit. (Not: I eat a lot of fruits.)
    • However, if you mean *different kinds* of fruit, you can use fruits: The market sells many exotic fruits.
  • Vegetables (always plural): In Spanish, “verdura” is singular. In English, we almost always use the plural form vegetables.
    • Correcto: I like vegetables. (Not: I like vegetable.)
    • You can say a vegetable for one single item.
  • Groceries (always plural): This word is always plural and takes a plural verb.
    • Correcto: My groceries are in the car. (Not: My grocery is in the car.)
